A New Kind Of Island Paradise

NOTE: This blog is just starting, so some editing and designing may still be in progress. If you see a tab that tells you to sign up for our weekly newsletter, we do not, as of Oct. 29, 2023, have a weekly newsletter.

A Greek island, Tilos, has achieved a new and revolutionary title–the first zero-waste island. With a little help from Polygreen, a waste-management company, the small island's 350 residents and many summer tourists achieved this feat in July of 2023. The island was already a national park and used renewable resources. So how did they achieve this groundbreaking title? Simple: through educating the public about trash waste. Trash bins were removed from the island to be replaced with containers for composting, recycling, and non-recyclable waste. But even the trash isn't trash–it's repurposed into something new–raw materials for construction, fuel, or art! Waste is sorted through a collection system, and Tilos now has around a 90% recycling and composting rate. It is also home to several rare species of plants and animals, which are now further being protected with this no-waste solution. On a grander scale, we could make this happen for gradually bigger and bigger places across the world!

The Good Seed here: Every little bit of effort counts, and this is a great example of how an environment-forward community can come together to help the environment a little more and take matters into their own hands.
